The WCU’s men’s basketball team was victorious in a close contest against Wofford College on Saturday, Jan. 28,  at the Ramsey Center, with a score 68-62.

After the loss to Furman University on Wednesday, Jan. 25, the men’s basketball team bounced back with a victory against a very resilient and physical Wofford team.

The Catamounts had a quick start scoring the first six points of the game, but Wofford fought back, keeping it close throughout the first half. There were a total of five lead changes in the first half. With seconds left in the first half, and the Cats leading 29-28, junior Haboubacar Mutombo beat the buzzer with a jumper that gave the Cats a 31-28 lead at the half.

As in the first half, the second half was incredibly close. The Catamounts started to pull ahead, but the Terriers fought back into the game and cut the lead to four in the final seconds of the half.

Junior Devin Peterson led the Catamounts in scoring with 16 points for the game. While sophmore Marc Gosselin led the Catamounts in rebounds with nine.

Head Coach Larry Hunter was happy with the performance of his team.

“I thought the guys on the floor stayed focused even when there was something that went against us, when we faced a little adversity,” Coach Hunter said. “We have really challenged them because that’s not how you deal with life when you face adversity, you have to show a little fight and heart and I thought we showed both of those things tonight.”

The Catamounts will be on a three game road trip, with their first game being on Monday, Jan. 30, against Mercer University.
