WCU baseball fans no longer allowed behind right field

Western Carolina University baseball fans are no longer allowed to watch games sitting behind right field. This rule will start on the game on April 29 when WCU faces Mercer.

The new policy comes after fans complained of racist, hateful comments toward a student-athlete at the April 20 game against Virginia Tech, according to an email from WCU athletic director, Randy Eaton.

Fans behind right field yelled racial slurs at the Virginia Tech player during the game, said a source who works for the WCU athletic department.

“Racist behavior is counter to our community creed and its emphasis on respect for others. Unlawful discrimination is a violation of WCU policies,” said Eaton in the email.

The investigation has now been turned over to Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students Kevin Koett in the Student Affairs department. All students involved in the incident may face disciplinary action.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Koett via e-mail at kskoett@wcu.edu.
