Western Carolina track on top after day one

Western Carolina University Men’s and Women’s track team are currently in first place after day one of the Beynon Sports Surface Catamount Classic in Cullowhee.

“We feel like our kids had competed hard and well and putting up some good marks,” said Western men’s and women’s head coach, Danny Williamson. “We’ll just see how it turns out tomorrow.”

Western Carolina’s Men’s track and field team are currently sitting on top of the leader board with a score of 70. Behind them is the University of North Carolina in Asheville with 26 points. East Tennessee State University is in third with 20 points.

Western’s Men’s team finished first place in the decathlon (Draven Crist), hammer throw (Jared Johnson) and high jump (Tyrie Adams).

10000 meter run. She finished in first place with a time of 38:18. Dayton distance runner, Nicole Steinbecker finished in second with a time of 38:59.

WCUs, Tamilia Wright also finished in first for the triple jump.

Western Carolina’s Women’s team is currently in first place with 56 points. Marshall University is 13.5 points behind Western in second place. Dayton University is in third with 34 points.

“I’m really excited that we are having a home meet that has some very good competition,” said Browder. “I hope the rest of the meet goes just as well.”

The Beynon Sports Surface Catamount Classic will continue April 16 at 10 a.m. in Cullowhee.
