The Western Carolina University men’s basketball team won, despite a late rally by the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Mocs, Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Ramsey center, in front of a crowd of just under 2,000.

The Catamounts started the game hot and established an early 20 to 6 lead.

The Catamounts wanted to come out and play tough defense after losing on the road by 19 to the Mocs earlier this year, according to Catamount Forward, Torrion Brummitt.

See some of the highlights below.

“They are going to come out and they are looking to hit you in the mouth and basically hit them back,“ said Brummitt.

Chattanooga came out firing in the second half and narrowed the Catamount lead to 62 to 58 with only 44 seconds remaining in the game.

The Catamounts responded by hitting 5 of 6 late free throws to close out the game with a 67 to 61 win.

“I was very, very proud of our guys. I thought we had a really good mind set to compete. Chattanooga is a really good team having a great year,” said coach Hunter.

The Catamounts were led in scoring by forward Torrion Brummitt and guard Devin Peterson who each scored 16.

Forward Justin Browning added a game high 8 steals and 3 blocks. Browning was the only player to play the entire game and did so on a bad ankle according to Hunter.

Next for the Catamounts is a matchup with Samford on Saturday, Feb. 13, in the Ramsey Center at 4:30 p.m.

“We are looking forward to playing Samford. We got to get them back. We owe them. We had a tough loss there in Birmingham. So we are looking to give them an “L”,” said Catamount guard, Devin Peterson.
