Western Carolina University Women’s Basketball team prevailed in a home game against the University of North Carolina Greensboro on Jan. 30.

The Cats beat the Spartans 84-72 for a crowd of 695 people. Cat’s starting forward, Sherae Bonner had nine rebounds and scored 14 points. Raziyah Farrington and Julia Brown also had 14 points.

For 30 minutes the Cats lead the game. The score was 43-37 at half time. With 7 lead changes in the second half, the score stayed tighter. It was tied at 59 points by the end of the third quarter. This would be the only quarter that the Spartans would out score the Cats, 22-16.

With around three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Cats decided it was time to break away from the back and forth scoring.

“Coach Mac challenged us in the time out to just be tough and to rebound,” said starting guard, Lindsay Simpson.

Both Simpson and Brown dropped two three pointers in the final quarter.

“They wouldn’t run my screen and I just saw the opening and I just had the confidence to knock them down,” explained Simpson.

With a 12 point lead and 15 sec. left in the game the Cats had put this one away.

“Our game plan was basically to pack down the lane because they like to drive and they like to get offensive rebounds,” starting guard, Kyia Hough said. “I think we fought pretty hard throughout and we executed one of the game plans. That got us a win today.”

The Cats will travel to Macon, GA on Feb. 4 to face Mercer.
