The Western Carolina University baseball team faced Appalachian State Friday, May 2, and won!

With Western trailing App, the Catamounts scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat App by one run. The fans erupted with yells and shouts congratulating the Cats on their victory and expressed their enjoyment in watching.

Students and fans came to watch the game in support of the team. With the stadium being almost completely filled there were many cheers and shouts during the plays of the game. The audience stood and cheered when the Cats scored runs, booed at calls that they didn’t agree with, and chanted players names as they made plays or came up to bat.

“I enjoy coming to the games. Everyone should come support our school,” Shelby Downing, a spectator and student of Western said.
Brian Horan also said that people should come and watch and show their school spirit.

Jason Smith, a player on the team commented on fans participation and attendance at the games and what a difference it makes on the morale of the team.

“It was a pretty good crowd. It makes a big difference because when we score it gets louder than when it does when there’s nobody there.”

The baseball team as well as all athletics of Western need support through attendance and participation. The weather may not always be favorable but the sporting events held at Western usually include laughs, activities, food, and fun.
