On a misty morning, around 170 students, faculty and visitors competed in a race across WCU’s campus in pursuit of $100.

The 5k race marked the start of the 38th Mountain Heritage Day under sponsorship of WCU Event Management.

The race started at 8 a.m. on the dot at Mckee, and racers were tasked with finishing the course in 50 minutes at the same location.

The cost of entry was $15 in advance, $25 at the race and $10 at any point for students. All proceeds in the race went to the Sports Management Association.

The winner, Dan Henry, is a WCU student in the Athletic Training program. He has been prepared for events like this for several years since he ran track at Akron Falls High School in Ohio.

“I’ve been training since high school,” said Henry. “I put in some base miles and always went for an even faster pace. I always prepare for fast races.”
