CORBIN, Ky. – The WCU Cycling Team participated in their third mountain bike race of the season Sunday, Sept. 16 at a course hosted by Union College in Kentucky.

Two athletes represented WCU in the cross-country mountain bike race. Nick Lacombe (Raleigh, N.C.) placed first in the Class C race and Matt Schumaker (Marietta, Ohio) placed seventh in the Class B race.

“I don’t do this for me, I do it for them,” said Schumaker, who takes a lighthearted approach to racing, screaming like a wild banshee and taunting other riders throughout the course. “I felt like it was going to be fun, but didn’t anticipate it going so well.”

Lacombe easily came away with the win in his race, but said he was disappointed there were only two other riders in the Class C race and he intends to move up to the B race next time. Class B races are longer and feature more technical aspects in the course.

“WCU Cycling shows a lot of promise this year,” said Lacombe, vice president of the WCU Cycling Club. “There are some good new guys and everyone is out there to have a good time, without being too serious.”

The WCU Cycling Team will travel to Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 22 for their next mountain bike race of the season.
