A multi-use trail system is currently under construction behind the new Health and Human Sciences Building on WCU’s West Campus.

Upon completion, there will be 6.7 miles of narrow single track trail for mountain biking, trail running and hiking. The estimated completion date is at the end of February 2013.

“This trail system will be a great resource for WCU and the surrounding community,” said Josh Whitmore, Associate Director of Outdoor Programs at WCU. “I believe the trail system will add greatly to the amenities available for students and staff.”

“Having a high quality trail system on campus offers more opportunity for people to engage in outdoor activities associated with the mountain lifestyle like hiking or mountain biking, things that help make WCU unique among universities,” Whitmore said.

The trail project has been a joint effort between volunteers and a professional trail contractor.  Volunteer work is still needed to complete the trail project. Upcoming volunteer work days are:

– Monday, January 28th: 2-5pm (Meet at Base Camp at 2pm)
– Monday, February 4th: 2-5pm (Meet at Base Camp at 2pm)
– Monday, February 11th: 2-5pm (Meet at Base Camp at 2pm)
– Monday, February 18th: 2-5pm (Meet at Base Camp at 2pm)

Can’t make it to any of the sessions above? Email Josh Whitmore at jwhitmore@wcu.edu to set up a work session just for you!

Volunteers are asked to meet at Base Camp Cullowhee, located at the Brown building.  Recommended things to bring to a work day include long pants, sturdy shoes, bottled water, gloves, backpack and snacks.

You can get more information about the trail on the WCU website.  You can also subscribe to the trail system volunteer mailing list.

UPDATE:

The trail is now in it’s final stages towards completion, all that is left is for 2 miles of finishing work (cutting roots, clearing brush) by volunteers.

There will be a grand opening party February 23rd from 11-5pm. There will be organized rides, free food and hiking opportunities. The party will be located behind the softball field at the picnic shelter at WCU next to Cullowhee Creek.
