Catamount Football Spring Update

The Western Carolina football program began it’s mandated spring practices under new coach, Mark Speir last week. The team practiced in full pads and Speir was pleased with the effort of his players.

“Overall, I was really pleased with the intensity and focus and the way our guys came out and attacked this first day in full pads,” said Speir. “I thought both sides were very, very spirited and that led to an intense practice. We had a lot of individual improvements, and I was very pleased with our first day in full pads.”

Of course the main question (which will probably not be answered until the fall), is who will be the starting quarterback to run Speir’s spread offense?

Four quarterbacks took snaps at quarterback during drills as the coaching staff began its evaluating process. Rising junior, Brandon Pechloff, redshirt freshman, Jawan Simmons, juco transfer Eddie Sullivan and newly-enrolled freshman, Michael Helms, all were given opportunities at quarterback.

WCU will continue its 15 day spring practices up until Saturday, April 14.
