Dr. Liliya Bayanova from Kazan University in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, came to talk to WCU students, faculty, and staff about the opportunities available at Kazan University during their summer school session.
Kazan University will be the host of the “2013 Universiade,” which is similar to the Olympic games, except for college students. Kazan is located about four hours east of Moscow and is know as a “multi-ethnic city” where they believe in peace and friendship between all cultures. The theme for the city is “Kazan, Where Europe Meets Asia” and they take pride in diversity.
There are about 20 thousand students in Tatarstan and Kazan University is one of the biggest private universities in the area. In all Kazan has about 22 specialty programs ranging from business-law to hospitality and tourism. Many classes are taught in Russian but the university has numerous translators available. Some classes however, will be available in English for international students.
The university has many programs that match WCU’s programs and that follow the same curriculum patterns. One program that Bayanova is showcasing to Western Carolina students is the business program. They have a very strong business program and the classes meet WCU’s business course requirements. The university is willing to work with international students to find classes that will meet the programs expectations so they can still graduate on time.
Kazan University is also willing to create a short Russian language program during the summer for students interested in intensive Russian language studies. Kazan has partnerships with many other universities across the world; China, Dublin, Turkey, and even London. They would like to start up a program with WCU and possibly send exchange students to Western Carolina and have WCU students attend Kazan University.
The total cost for the summer term at Kazan University is about $1,220, which includes: classes, accommodation, trips, cultural activities and visa support. Students that receive finical aid can use their aid for the term in Tatarstan. The deadline to apply is May 1st.
The Tatarstan area has a lot to offer young individuals. The university is close to the city center, and living in dorms or with host families would make the transitions to the Russian life more adaptable.
